Indian Wells

Guide to Indian Wells, CA

This affluent town might not take up much space on the map, but Indian Wells is certainly one of the Coachella Valley’s most distinguished destinations. If a day filled with golf, spa treatments and world-class events sounds like your brand of relaxation, don’t miss a chance to unwind in Indian Wells.

Though Indian Wells is rather small geographically, the city is home to four of the desert’s premier resorts: Miramonte Resort & Spa, Indian Wells Resort Hotel, Hyatt Regency Indian Wells Resort & Spa and the Renaissance Esmeralda Resort & Spa. Each of these resorts offers an opulent experience with onsite amenities including golf courses, spas, tennis courts and fine dining, to name a few.

Golfers love Indian Wells for its challenging championship courses with views of the Santa Rosa and San Jacinto Mountains. Bob Hope did, too; after all, the Indian Wells Country Club was home to the celebrity entertainer’s Bob Hope Classic golf tournament (now the Humana Challenge) for more than 40 years. The nearby Indian Wells Golf Resort and its IW Club clubhouse are also favorites with local golfers, thanks to two award-winning courses and the onsite Callaway Performance Center, where you can get fitted for custom clubs with the center’s state-of-the-art technology.

Beyond the golf courses, you’ll find some of the desert’s best spas in Indian Wells. The Well at The Miramonte, for example, consistently ranks as one of the top resort spas in North America according to Conde Nast Traveler, while the Spa Esmeralda at the Renaissance is known for its beautiful surroundings and renewing treatments.

Indian Wells is also home to some of the Coachella Valley’s finest annual events, such as the Indian Wells Arts Festival held at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden every April. More than 200 award-winning artists take to the garden to showcase their creativity, which includes paintings, sculptures, glass and jewelry.

The Indian Wells Tennis Garden also hosts the world’s top tennis players every March during the BNP Paribas Open, one of the world’s largest tennis tournaments. Everyone from Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal to Serena Williams and Maria Sharapova have played here, and during the event, you just might catch one of these star tennis pros warming up on the local courts.

Another distinguished event in Indian Wells is Desert Town Hall, an annual lecture series held at the Renaissance Esmeralda. Early each year, four world leaders take the stage to discuss some of the world’s most pressing issues. Past speakers have included President George W. Bush, author Malcolm Gladwell and British Prime Minister Tony Blair.

For a taste of the best that the desert has to offer, put Indian Wells on the top of your list for your next trip to the Coachella Valley.
